A couple of weekends ago my mom, my sister and I all went for a day trip up to Pescadero. We drive up there every once in a while and we always go into the small town and we buy some artichoke bread. Its the most amazing artichoke bread. After walking in the small town we walked on the beach for a little while because the weather was great.

I am off from school this week so I should be writing more posts.


Holiday Season Favorites

During the holiday season we have a few favorite dishes. Potato Latkes and Noodle Kugel are recipes we have been making for a long time in our family, others such as Cassoulet are new editions. We wanted to share these 3 recipes with you because they would be a great addition to your holiday.

Noodle Kugel

3/4Do the whole recipe in 2 steps or 2 days.


1/2 lb. medium noodles

1/2 lb. cream cheese

3/4 lb. dry cottage cheese

1 cup of sour cream

1/4 lb. butter or margarine

1/2 teaspoon of salt

3 eggs

1/4 cup of  sugar

1/4 cup of brown sugar

1/2 stick of butter

slivered almonds

1st Part:

Boil noodles until tender, drain water. In a electric mixer, or with a hand held one, mix together the cream cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, butter, salt, eggs, and the sugar (not the brown sugar). Once combined fold the noodles  into the mixture, pour and spread mixture into a 9″x 13″ pan and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 min.

2nd Part:

When the noodle kugel is completely cool, begin melting brown sugar and butter together. Once the brown sugar and butter are syrupy spread it on top of kugel along with the slivered almonds, then begin baking it again at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for another 30 min.

A Day Off with Some Used Books

Today Zoe and I didn’t have school because of Thanksgiving break, so we decided to do a little used book shopping. I have been wanting a copy of the book  The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde for a while. My sister read it and after her summary I had to read it. We lost her copy somewhere when we were in Europe this summer, but now we have the Penguin Classics hardback edition.

I am so excited to read it after I finish Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, which is so far one of the best books I have ever read (I started it a week ago). It makes me think about some things I take for granted. Anyway, Zoe got another book written by Ishiguro while we were there.  The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, which sounds very good too.

We bought the books at a used bookstore in SF called Green Apple, we have been going for a while, since it has been a favorite of our father’s for a while. It is a great bookstore, with some great used book picks, along with new ones. There are used cds, records, movies etc. Zoe sometimes spends hours in there.

Green Apple is on Clement and 6th Avenue, and is a great place to visit if your in the area or if your a book junkie.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

Its getting close to thanksgiving, and the pumpkins are in season. My sister and I have had a long love of pumpkin and chocolate, and these cookies sounded too good to pass up.  My sister showed me the recipe, from a blog she reads called the A Merry Mishap. These cookies don’t take long, and don’t require a lot of ingredients, they are perfect for a quick homemade treat!

2 1/2 cups of all purpose flour

1 teaspoon of baking soda

1 teaspoon of baking powder

1 teaspoon of cinnamon (grounded)

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (grounded)

1/2 teaspoon of salt

3/4 cup of butter, room temperature

1/4 cup of butter flavored shortening

1/2 cup of sugar

1/2 cup of brown sugar

1 egg

1 cup of canned pumpkin puree

1 egg

1 teaspoon of vanilla

1 package of milk chocolate chips (or if you want something a little more bitter, semisweet work well also)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Farenheit, 175 degrees Celsius

1. In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.

2. In a standing mixer (or handheld) mix together the butter, sugar, and shortening until creamed.

3. Add the pumpkin, egg, and vanilla. Mix until combined.

4. Add the dry mixture, once combined add chocolate chips.

Bake in oven for 11 minutes.

I didn’t get a chance to take any pictures of the final product, they got eaten too fast!

S’more “Cupcakes”

Last Week my grade was hosting a bakesale, and we were all asked to bring in either cupcakes, or cookies. The one problem I always face with bakesales, is having time to actually bake something. These “cupcakes” are the perfect recipe if you have limited time. The reason I put these cupcakes in quotation marks is because, really they aren’t cupcakes. They are actually more smore’s in cupcake from, than actual minture s’more cakes. Nonetheless they are delicious! Perfect for bakesales, because who dosen’t love s’mores?

Also really these cupcakes are extremely easy, they take no time, and are extremely rewarding. I have to say my one problem is they are extremely buttery! Though that isn’t that bad, and they really only seem very buttery when they are first out of the oven, only becasue the butter is all melty. Though if you are not a in the mood that much butter, I would suggest taking out some. Also the original recipe makes 6 extra large cupcakes, but for the bake sale I needed to have 12 cupcakes so I just used 12 spot muffin pan, and I knew we would want extra to eat, so I doubled the recipe.


4 cups of graham cracker crums (buy at least one box of graham crackers)

4 tablespoons of sugar

3 Sticks of butter, unsalted, melted

2 Cups of cut up milk chocolate bars, hershey’s works well, cut the chocolate bar into bit sized pieces. (about 12 ounces of chocolate, about 3 bars)

24 marshmallows


Preheat oven t0 325 degrees farenheit

Line 2 muffin tins (with twelve each) I would suggest using paper cups or silicone ones, greasing won’t do very good because these cupcakes can be very messy.

Mix together the graham cracker crumbs and sugar in a medium bowl. Stir in the melted butter, make sure the graham cracker sugar mixture is evenly moistened. Stir in the chopped chocolate.

Next Fill the cups. Each cup should be filled about 3/4 full. Press the mixture and make a small indentation in the middle. Then bake for 10 minutes, then take out the pan, and place one marshmallow on each cupcake. Bake for another 10 minutues, the cupcakes should be golden. Then cool on a wire rack (its ok if you dig in early)

Can be stored in a covered container for 3 days.
